Come April, stand-up paddle boarder and Austin, TX native, Aaron Gonzalez will begin the trip of a lifetime. Gonzalez will paddle board 400 miles along the Texas coast, and he's doing it standing!
"I'm going to be the first man to stand-up paddle board the entire coast of Texas, solo and unsupported, all for a charity that helps train service dogs for vets," Gonzalez said.
His mission to help that charity begins on April 1st at Boca Chica Beach on the Texas-Mexico border. Weather permitting, he'll arrive at the Texas-Louisiana border 14-30 days later.
He's taking a long list of supplies for the adventure, including a 10-day supply of food, three gallons of water, a tent, cot, chair, batteries and more. Gonzalez says he's been planning the trip for about a year.
"I need adventure in my life," Gonzalez said. "I can't sit in a cubicle. It's not my style."
His goal is to travel about 30 miles a day, making stops to camp on the beach at night. He also has two supply pick-up locations where he'll re-stock on food and water. One of those stops is at Board House Surf and Skate Shop in Port Aransas, where he'll store his food for the trip.
Gonzalez says, the preparation alone has been a challenge.
"Because I'm going solo and unsupported, I really have to take things very serious as far as my food, my water," Gonzalez said.
But it's not the possible danger along the way he's concerned about.
"I would say probably the biggest thing that scares me about the entire trip, is not competing it."
